Mysterious Mummy Discovered in Peru with Hands Covering Its Face
In 2021,

archaeologists from the National University of San Marcos made a remarkable discovery in an underground tomb located in Cajamarquilla, approximately 15.5 miles inland from Lima, the capital of Peru. They uncovered a mummy, well-preserved and fully bound in ropes, with its hands covering its face.

This intriguing mummy is estimated to be between 800 and 1,200 years old. While its striking pose—bound and positioned in a fetal manner—may seem unsettling, researchers suggest that this represents a southern Peruvian funerary custom, reflecting the cultural practices of the time.

The tomb itself contained not only the mummy but also an array of artifacts, including ceramics, vegetable remains, and stone tools, providing valuable insights into the burial customs and daily life of ancient Peruvian societies.
