COITOPHOBIA - FEAR OF SEX

This is a fear of sexual intercourse. 

The victim of this condition does not just have a dislike for sexual intimacy 

But experiences fear and extreme anxiety when sex is initiated or at the thought of sex. 

The condition is common in women but it is not uncommon in men. 

Symptoms include:

1. An immediate feeling of fear, anxiety and panic.

2. Nausea, palpitations, sweating and difficulties in breathing. 

3. Loss of self control. The victim may be aware that the fear is unreasonable but they are unable to control themselves. 

Causes:

1. History of rape or any form of sexual abuse.

2. Body shame or being overly aware of parts of ones body that they don't like.

3. Performance anxiety 

4. Erectile dysfunction 

5. Vaginismus. This is painful sex caused by tightening of the vagina due to involuntary contraction of the vaginal wall. 

Treatment:

Available remedies depend on the underlying cause.
