Some women are at higher risk of early-onset labor leading to premature births.
A history of preterm births, problems with the cervix or uterus, being underweight or overweight, diabetes, hypertension, and infection increase the likelihood of premature births. Mothers under 17 and over 40 are also at greater risk, as are those who smoke during pregnancy. Contractions, bleeding, water breaking, decreases in fetal movements, or a “show” of mucus from the vagina before the 37th week of pregnancy could signify premature labor.
