Buchenwald, meaning Beech forest in German was a Nazi concentration camp established on Ettersberg hill near Weimar, Germany, in July 1937. It was one of the first and the largest of the concentration camps within Germany’s 1937 borders. The brutal Ilse Koch and her husband Karl-Otto Koch were the camp commanders here from August 1, 1937 to July 1941. Koch was arrested in August 1943. Karl-Otto Koch was tried and sentenced by an SS court for embezzlement of funds and was executed by firing squad on April 5, 1945. Ilse was released after spending sixteen months in the Gestapo prison in Weimar. She was arrested by American troops in Ludwigsburg. She stood trial along 30 other defendants for war crimes committed at Buchenwald. Found guilty she was sentenced to life imprisonment but her sentence was reduced to 4 years. After a few other court appearances she committed suicide by hanging herself at Aichach women’s prison on September 1st, 1967 at the age of 60. Always remember what happened here.
